Choosing a location is one of the first questions families ask me. The good news is that West Wiltshire is full of green, easy places for children to run around, and you rarely need to drive more than fifteen minutes. Here are my favourites, with tips on when to go and what each one is best for.
1. Southwick Country Park, Trowbridge
Around 100 acres of meadows, woodland edges and streams on the southern side of Trowbridge. It has open fields for running and playing, long grass that glows in the evening, and quieter paths for calmer portraits. It is my first suggestion for families who want somewhere close, with easy parking and space for toddlers.
Best for: young children, golden hour sessions, summer and early autumn.
2. Biss Meadows Country Park, Trowbridge
A newer park on the east side of town with wildflower meadows, ponds and wide paths. In late spring and summer the meadows are full of colour, which makes a soft, natural background without much effort.
Best for: wildflower photos, buggy-friendly paths, relaxed walks.
3. Barton Farm Country Park, Bradford on Avon
A short drive away, between the River Avon and the Kennet and Avon Canal, close to the medieval Tithe Barn. You get water, old stone, trees and towpaths all in one place, so it suits families who want variety in their gallery.
Best for: older children, autumn colours, a mix of nature and historic stone.
4. Bluebell woods near Erlestoke
For a few weeks each spring, usually from mid-April to early May, the woods around Erlestoke turn blue. It is one of the most magical backdrops in the area, and these sessions book up quickly. We always stay on the paths to protect the flowers.
Best for: spring mini sessions, newborn and toddler family photos, a dreamy feel. See my bluebell gallery.
5. Westbury White Horse and Bratton Camp
High on the edge of Salisbury Plain, with huge skies and views across the Wiltshire countryside. It can be windy, but at sunset it is spectacular.
Best for: big views, families with older children, evening light.
6. Your own home and garden
Some of my favourite family galleries happen at home. Children feel relaxed, babies can nap, and the photos show the place where your family life really happens. Home sessions work well all year round, especially in winter.
Tips for a relaxed outdoor session
- Timing. The hour or two before sunset gives the softest light. In summer, mornings work well too.
- Clothes. Choose two or three soft colours that go together rather than matching outfits, and avoid large logos.
- Weather. If it rains, I move your session to another date free of charge.
- Travel. Locations within 5 miles of Trowbridge are free. Bradford on Avon and Westbury are included, and places within 20 miles are a flat £15.
Family sessions start at £195. See the full packages on my family photography page.
